Market Overview

In the Hong Kong securities market, a wide range of services are provided including trading, clearing and settlement, depository and brokerage services, and information services covering multiple categories of products and assets. In Hong Kong, a company can go public on the Main Board or the GEM according to its profitability and the size. As at the end of 2020, there were 2,538 companies listed on the Main Board and the GEM of the Hong Kong stock exchange with an average daily turnover of HK$1,295 million.


Trading Hours

The market is open for trading at the following sessions from Monday to Friday (public holidays excluded):
Full day trading
Auction Session
Pre-opening Session
9:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
Closing Auction Session
4:00 p.m. to a random closing, between 4:08 p.m. and 4:10 p.m.
Continuous Trading Session
Morning Session
9:30 a.m. – 12:00 noon
Afternoon Session
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.


Rules of Trading

The Hong Kong stock transaction settled on T+2 days. Investors are allowed to buy or sell stocks for multiple times on the same day, while the number of shares of a specific board lot varies among different stocks. The trading orders are classified as: at-auction order, limit order, enhanced limit and special limit order.
